Expert Evaluation Explained

An Expert Heuristic Evaluation, or expert review, is a method of assessing the ease-of-use inherent in a product or service. The objective of a heuristic evaluation is to define and document usability and design issues, and to recommend solutions accordingly. As a general rule, a problem that is determined will likely affect in excess of 5% of users is deemed resolution critical. (This is a "general rule" because when a project involves, for example, the medical / surgical field, we set the bar considerably higher.)

Our Role

Typically, 2 to 4 of our human factors, cognitive psychology, or usability engineering professionals evaluate the subject interface against a set of usability and design heuristics, and human--computer interface rules. In addition, this often includes conducting contextual inquiry interviews with real customers in order to understand typical usability issues that users encounter.

While each specific project contract determines exactly what the IAA deliverable will be, most often the client receives a single, comprehensive report. Included are identified issues at both a global (across the entire product or service) and local (specific and/or isolated) level, along with solutions and design recommendations, all presented in a format that makes correctly actioning each item straightforward.
