While other books are looking to the Web and people with disabilities to focus attention on accessibility issues, "Accessibility for Everybody: Understanding the Section 508 Accessibility Requirements" looks that whole picture--accessibility for everyone in every environment. The government quickly realized that they have a wealth of older applications that will never appear on the Internet, but require some type of remedial upgrade to make them more accessible. The Section 508 rules don't just touch on the Internet, they provide rules about every aspect of computer use. Issues such as how to build accessible furniture or adding accessibility features to the phone system cannot be addressed within the scope of this book, but the book will touch on every issue the average Windows developer is going to want to know about. Eventually, the vast majority of developers will recognize the need to add accessibility as one of the design goals for any application. However, one of the issues hindering that goal is the language used to convey the legal requirements for accessibility. This book seeks to remove the artificial hurdles presented by the language of the law by presenting the information in plain English. In short, this book about accessibility will make the Section 508 requirements more accessible to the average developer. Included will be Web sites, programming examples, sources of additional information, and other aids meant to make the job easier.

Providing library access to the disabled includes making available not only physical facilities but also the information they contain, including electronic information. Mates, head of the Cleveland Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, presents guidance for providing electronic information to visually and aurally impaired patrons and to those whose learning disabilities make using printed materials difficult or impossible. She reviews such devices as voice synthesizers, Braille printers and translators, modifications to keyboards and other input devices, and optical character recognition systems. She considers funding the acquisition of such aids, publicizing them, and training staff to use them; and she lists selected vendors, adaptive technology Web sites, and libraries possessing adaptive technology programs.

There used to be a specific safety analysis model to follow that fit all situations, but more and more, that thinking is being replaced by a more practical, adaptive approach based on specific personnel, functions, and the facilities involved. Dan Petersen captures this new way of thinking in his completely updated and revised classic reference, Analyzing Safety System Effectiveness. Establishing a three-part paradigm, he uses a step-by-step approach safety professionals can use to develop flexible new plans for analyzing the physical, managerial, and behavioral aspects of their existing safety programs.

A concise text focusing on the practical applications of ergonomics and is derived from the annual, US conference of the same name. This is not a conference proceedings but a text of applications, seeking to fill a niche in the ergonomic professional market for a book that is strong on the applications side of the field rather than the purely academic. This book is the latest in a series of volumes which gather together a series of papers across the board in applied ergonomics and human factors. It covers applications in engineering, medicine, safety and health and derives from the ground-breakingly successful conference of the same name.
by Thomas W. King
September 14, 1998
The Information Age has transformed the way in which humans communicate and interact with each other in almost every aspect. This new relationship between humans and technology has been an added convenience for some, and a sheer blessing for others; for those with physical and communication impairments, modern-day technology has transformed daily living into a journey toward capability instead of disability. In its examination of assistive technology, this book serves as an essential resource for clinicians, product developers, families and individuals as they recommend, select, purchase, design, and use assistive technology. Combining real experience and academic research, King examines how humans can adapt to machinery and increase the acceptance, effectiveness, and efficiency of technology. This book investigates how psychological factors (such as fear, stress, rejection, etc.) can affect the efficiency of assistive technology. Product developers, speech pathologists, audiologists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation counselors, special educators, nurses, and businesses. A Longwood Professional Book

In work environments world-wide, whether simple or complex, the ways in which people think, do their jobs, and interface with other human beings grow out of their experiences in the groups of which they are or have been a part. How these influences affect their performance and human interfacing in work environments throughout the world is the subject of cultural ergonomics. In this volume, distinguished scientists explore these cultural influences in relation to significant current concerns of ergonomics and human factors. These include scientific-philosophical considerations, aircraft safety, maritime safety, cross-national training, effective use of the world-wide web, multinational decision making, third- world industrial development, implementation of technology transfer, and the functioning of multicultural teams.

Users experience the usability of a web site before they have committed to using it and before making any purchase decisions. The web is the ultimate environment for empowerment, and he or she who clicks the mouse decides everything. Designing Web Usability is the definitive guide to usability from Jakob Nielsen, the world's leading authority. Over 250,000 Internet professionals around the world have turned to this landmark book, in which Nielsen shares the full weight of his wisdom and experience. From content and page design to designing for ease of navigation and users with disabilities, he delivers complete direction on how to connect with any web user, in any situation. Nielsen has arrived at a series of principles that work in support of his findings: 1. That web users want to find what they're after quickly; 2. If they don't know what they're after, they nevertheless want to browse quickly and access information they come across in a logical manner. This book is a must-have for anyone who thinks seriously about the web.

The Ergonomic Model in Occupational Therapy: Adapting the Environment of the Home, Work, and School to Prevent Disability is an exciting new text that explores the emerging role of the occupational therapist in the health care system of the 21st century. The occupational therapists role is essentially three fold as a healer, teacher, and ergonomist. In this multiple role the therapist uses purposeful and meaningful activities as a treatment agent, as a teacher or facilitator of health and wellness, and as an ergonomist fitting and accommodating the environment and adapting tools and devises to meet the needs of the client. Inside this comprehensive text the clinician and student will learn how to apply the ergonomic model to traditional contexts in occupational therapy, such as work, home, school, and leisure environments. The primary purpose of the ergonomic model is to prevent injuries, compensate for impairments, and promote functional independence.
