Usability Quote of the Day

February 9, 2012

Most people who encounter computer-based automation at work do not choose the software with which they work, and have comparatively little control over when and how they do what they do. For them, the use of computers can be an oppressive experience, rather than a liberating one. -- Sarah Kuhn, Bringing Design to Software, edited by Terry Winograd, 1996    (via interaction-design.org)

Do you make this mistake in content management?

"The biggest mistake in content management is writing for the organization and not for the reader. It is one of the hardest mistakes to correct, but there are ways to ensure that you don't make it."

One of the best ways to get people to trust you is to directly address their needs. And one of the best ways to do that is to create a fictional character that represents that person. This is a classic technique of writing. John Steinbeck, for example, had an idealized reader that he wrote for, as did many other authors.
