Usability Quote of the Day

May 23, 2012

There's something very odd going on here. If designers made completely unrealistic assumptions about the physical world when designing technology, then we would blame them (and likely sue them) for technical incompetence. Yet when they make grossly unrealistic assumptions about human nature... we don't blame the designers, we blame the unfortunate people who are just trying to do what the design requires. -- Kim Vicente, The Human Factor, p. 45.    (via interaction-design.org)

FacetedBrowsing

FacetedBrowsing is one way to use a FacetedClassification system to allow users to find information.
The key elements of a FacetedBrowsing system are that:

* users filter a set of items by progressively selecting from only valid values
* the list of valid values are filtered to only show those that do have results available
* results are displayed as soon as possible
* it is impossible to get an empty result
* any facet can be chosen as a starting point
* it sits on top of a FacetedClassification system
* it does not involve entering keywords
