Usability Quote of the Day

November 20, 2008

Software design is the act of determining the user's experience with a piece of software. It has nothing to do with how the code works inside, or how big or small the code is. The designer's task is to specify completely and unambiguously the user's whole experience. -- David Liddle, From Bringing Design to Software, edited by Terry Winograd, 1996   (via interaction-design.org)

MasterCard Usability Team Honors the Most Usable Sites on the Web

MasterCard International announced today that it is hosting its first annual Usability Excellence Awards, created to recognize the most usable sites on the Web. Beginning today, companies can nominate their sites for consideration and evaluation by one of the premier usability teams in the United States - MasterCard International's Usability Services Team.

The Usability Services Team at MasterCard International specializes in managing payment functions with retailers, and creating and working on existing sites so that they function intuitively for a better consumer experience. The team examines the design and functionality of interactive properties such as hardware, software, intranet, extranets and external-facing Internet sites.

"Overlooking the usability of a site in favor of eye-catching design can be very costly to a company," said Jennifer Ruffino, the Certified Usability Analyst who leads the Usability Services Team at MasterCard. "The purpose of the awards program is to help bring attention to usability as a critical aspect of Web design. We're delighted to have the opportunity to share our expertise, acknowledge the best in the industry, and give insight to others, so they can offer users a better experience on their individual sites."
