Usability Quote of the Day

February 9, 2012

Most people who encounter computer-based automation at work do not choose the software with which they work, and have comparatively little control over when and how they do what they do. For them, the use of computers can be an oppressive experience, rather than a liberating one. -- Sarah Kuhn, Bringing Design to Software, edited by Terry Winograd, 1996    (via interaction-design.org)

How would you change Yahoo Music Unlimited?

"So not everyone is sold on the subscription music model, but lovers and haters alike are welcome to here imaginate some changes to the new Yahoo Music Unlimited service. We’ve only had a limited time to check it out so far — just long enough to start tearing it apart, as is our way. We’ll start with just a few initial items on the wishlist:

  • Make it take less than 2 hours to get it up and running

  • Less railroading into glossy commercial land and better selection of indie and small labels

  • The interface is some sort of strange mashup of Netscape and the iTunes Music Store and doesn’t really succeed well at either. Cleaner, please."
