Usability Quote of the Day

February 9, 2012

Most people who encounter computer-based automation at work do not choose the software with which they work, and have comparatively little control over when and how they do what they do. For them, the use of computers can be an oppressive experience, rather than a liberating one. -- Sarah Kuhn, Bringing Design to Software, edited by Terry Winograd, 1996    (via interaction-design.org)

Two Dimensional Navigation

"A recurring theme is often the requirement to navigate 2 dimensions of functionality.. The user first needing to navigate to a broad area of functionality then select some specific thing in there..

Property Tracker from Otter Software is a good example… it tries to manage financial records associated with Rental Properties.. the end result was Vertical Tabs and Horizontal Tabs.. a nightmare for the user to navigate, especially as they resize their screen and the number of tabs per line changes.

An “outlook” bar down the left may well have served better." (Via UI Hall of Shame)
