Usability Quote of the Day

May 23, 2012

There's something very odd going on here. If designers made completely unrealistic assumptions about the physical world when designing technology, then we would blame them (and likely sue them) for technical incompetence. Yet when they make grossly unrealistic assumptions about human nature... we don't blame the designers, we blame the unfortunate people who are just trying to do what the design requires. -- Kim Vicente, The Human Factor, p. 45.    (via interaction-design.org)

Usability: Card Sort Void

Looking for the right card sorting program ...

"Card sorting is a tool some usability professionals utilize in conducting user testing. How participants react to words on the cards helps determine the most appropriate terminology and the card groupings they form provides insight into logical information architecture. For example, if one was sorting ‘colors and fruit’ would “orange” be a color, or a fruit? There is no correct answer, but the way participants react to this provides meaningful user insight.

In searching for a world-wide online card sorting exercise, I was unable to find a software product that would meet my needs. I sought something that would:

1. Work like Solitaire – with drag and snap functionality to group items
2. Enable me to view all cards and groups at once
3. Allow me to name groups
4. Analyze the results for me
5. Function easily and as I needed it to
6. Provide timely development support"   continued ...   (Via Fresh Ink)
