A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. -- Antoine De Saint-Exupery   (via interaction-design.org)

iWhereToNow?

Multi-function devices usually do match a single device for each individual function ...

"Having recently acquired a Motorola handset (Razr) - for the sake of science I really do suffer - I'm confirmed in my belief that the firm still doesn't know much about what it's doing, interaction wise.

The iPhone seems to be a pairing of the worst of Apple (virtually no song capacity) with the worst of Motorola (fairly clueless interaction design and as unintegrated as you get).

However much so-called gurus promote the idea of convergence, I've always been convinced that I'll continue to want dedicated specialist devices that do what they do well. The flop that is the iPhone confirms me in the belief that 2+2 usually = -1. After all, who can be expected to (a) rise above its current major limitations (Motorola) AND (b) take to its heart a move that will destroy its existing market (Apple)? (See The Innovator's Dilemma by Clayton Christensen.) Putting together two existing players in this market just seems to add up to the worst of both worlds."   continued ...   (Via City of Bits)
