Usability Quote of the Day

May 23, 2012

There's something very odd going on here. If designers made completely unrealistic assumptions about the physical world when designing technology, then we would blame them (and likely sue them) for technical incompetence. Yet when they make grossly unrealistic assumptions about human nature... we don't blame the designers, we blame the unfortunate people who are just trying to do what the design requires. -- Kim Vicente, The Human Factor, p. 45.    (via interaction-design.org)

Colourful Language: Guidelines on using colours in user interfaces

A good article about the use of color for Website interface designs ...

"Colour can be a powerful tool in user interface design, but you need to use it sparingly and in the right places. Here's our checklist on using colours

Colour! We think of it (and it's often presented) as the property of objects which are rich, vibrant and life-affirming. Coloured things are interesting, fun and happy. Monochrome things are drab, dull, depressed.

Is this fair? Not really. Our response to colour is a largely emotional one, and whilst it's always good to be in touch with our emotions, there are plenty of times when it's best to set feelings aside. Like when we read and attempt to understand an elaborate legal document; try to convey important safety information; or remove every possibility of misinterpretation from a road sign."   continued ...   (Via Builder UK)
