Usability Quote of the Day

May 23, 2012

There's something very odd going on here. If designers made completely unrealistic assumptions about the physical world when designing technology, then we would blame them (and likely sue them) for technical incompetence. Yet when they make grossly unrealistic assumptions about human nature... we don't blame the designers, we blame the unfortunate people who are just trying to do what the design requires. -- Kim Vicente, The Human Factor, p. 45.    (via interaction-design.org)

Web Essentials '05: Bringing a Web conference to the Web

Two presentations from Web Essentials '05 ...

Last week I spoke at Web Essentials '05, an invigorating conference in Sydney, Australia. The folks attending were so engaged and excited; the other speakers brilliant and provocative. And our host John Allsopp took us out for post-conference surfing at Bondai. Nice!

What really set this even apart, though, was the organizers' willingness to experiment with extending the conference conversation beyond the two days. I was surprised with the extent these technologies really helped bring the event together, including an aggregated "WE05" tag for blog posts at Technorati and photos at Flickr. And, they've offered a Podcst subscription to the MP3 audio of all the sessions.

In that spirit, I've made my two presentations available as PDF downloads, with associated audio links under a Creative Commons Attribution License. The audio and slides aren't synced, so you'll have to try to keep up on your own. But the end result may give you incentive to join the party next year. Enjoy."   continued ...   (Via Jeffrey Veen)
