Usability Quote of the Day

May 23, 2012

There's something very odd going on here. If designers made completely unrealistic assumptions about the physical world when designing technology, then we would blame them (and likely sue them) for technical incompetence. Yet when they make grossly unrealistic assumptions about human nature... we don't blame the designers, we blame the unfortunate people who are just trying to do what the design requires. -- Kim Vicente, The Human Factor, p. 45.    (via interaction-design.org)

Feedback

Can you take a moment and give us a little feedback? Following are seven questions of interest. We would appreciate hearing your thoughts:

1. Do you find Usability In The News useful?
2. Do you find the article selection relevant?
3. What type of articles might be eliminated or added?
4. Do you find the photos with each article beneficial?
5. Would dropping the photos diminish the experience?
6. Do you find the amount of text per article about right?
7. Any suggestions for improving the site?

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer these questions. Use the Comments or send an email to Usernomics.

1) Absolutely. This site is my first page load of the day. I visit and refresh constantly throughout the day. It's currently number 5 on my top 10 sites list (Opera version 8+ keeps track of top ten sites). Please continue the great work.

2)Articles are very relevant. Your site has opened the door to many interesting sites and opinions. My bookmark list is greatly expanded thanks to the news you've pointed me to.

3)Articles are good- I can't say what to eliminate or add. You seem to always point me to something new.

4)It's funny you ask about this. I've always wondered who is taking the time to find an image to go along with the articles. It's a nice touch and adds depth, I recognize that it adds a layer of complexity to your postings, and I appreciate that.

5) That said- I think I could do without them. Preferably, if you could just use the image if it's from the article, that would be nice (easier?). Even still- only if the image adds to the article. For example, the pictures from to "Creating Passionate Users" are either really good (charts, graphs)- or really bad (old time sailor or Ward Cleaver etc).

6)Text article length is spot on- although since I have a tendency to ignore the headline box (see below) I miss postings sometime.

7)I would appreciate the "article via..." credits right next to the "Full Article" link. Or even better- replace full article link with a "via useit.com" link or something to make it clear of the source and what I'm about to click on.

Top of your screen takes up too much real estate and is frankly not very interesting. The most recent headline box would be better suited as a sidebar or something. That box with the scrollbar there in the middle of the page is useless to me, I don't even pay attention to it. If you sidebar it and show the whole list- it would be better (no scrolling!)

Redesign the top navigation to be less screen intensive.

Also (slightly off topic)- for as long as I've been reading your news site- I just now realized that you also have an "ergonmics in the news" page as well.

It's hard to find even if I new you had one. There is too much going on in the navigation on the ergonomics and usability pages you have.
