Usability Quote of the Day

February 9, 2012

Most people who encounter computer-based automation at work do not choose the software with which they work, and have comparatively little control over when and how they do what they do. For them, the use of computers can be an oppressive experience, rather than a liberating one. -- Sarah Kuhn, Bringing Design to Software, edited by Terry Winograd, 1996    (via interaction-design.org)

Marketwatch: A little too real-time?

A case of technolgy being ahead of the interface ...

"Marketwatch, just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Do you really need to embed stock quotes in your articles that update in real-time every three seconds? Real-time when I opened the article is nice, but having the prices flash and change every few seconds is pretty distracting when the changes are displayed in paragraph form like this:(below)

A little sidebar or embedded floating box would be cleaner and easier to scan too."   continued ...   (Via Signal vs. Noise)

Interesting read. Wondering if people should also mention what their profession is and how they are connected to finance web. If I do not have the urgency of real-time quotes, may be this feature is overkill for me.
