Usability Quote of the Day

February 9, 2012

Most people who encounter computer-based automation at work do not choose the software with which they work, and have comparatively little control over when and how they do what they do. For them, the use of computers can be an oppressive experience, rather than a liberating one. -- Sarah Kuhn, Bringing Design to Software, edited by Terry Winograd, 1996    (via interaction-design.org)

Best 2005: The New Sun.com Design

A nice overview of Sun's website UI changes ...

"The biggest visible change to our external web presence last year was the new design we posted in May. We've made continual improvements since the launch of that new design, but fundamentally the new design was born May 3rd. Changes included:

- Pulldown navigation on every page, allowing visitors to jump right to the most important areas of the site.
- A stunning new visual approach, particularly on the home page and high level 'gateway' pages. Not only does this look nice, but we built some navigational elements into the graphics to enable previews and navigational next steps and to help orient visitors about where they are.
- Keener focus on products, both in design and navigation, and also...
- A design structure that supports "big ideas" such as eco responsibility or new technology overviews
- Design integration of gateways and key sections so that things just work better together."   continued ...   (Via Sun.com)
