Usability Quote of the Day

February 9, 2012

Most people who encounter computer-based automation at work do not choose the software with which they work, and have comparatively little control over when and how they do what they do. For them, the use of computers can be an oppressive experience, rather than a liberating one. -- Sarah Kuhn, Bringing Design to Software, edited by Terry Winograd, 1996    (via interaction-design.org)

Usability in China: Coming Soon?

Usability is needed regardless of development location ...

“About 70 to 80% of internet users use broadband. One reason is that broadband access is quite cheap in China - it only costs about $10-15 a month for unlimited internet access.” (Chinese revolution turns hi-tech …)

Like many other people, I’m interested in the growth of China. I’m particularly interested in how technology is taking off. It is inevitable that there will be a huge demand for usability in the coming years.

A few years ago I interviewed my friend Daniel Szuc of Apogee Usability Asia Ltd. We focused on usability in Hong Kong in 2002, but the usability movement is growing on the mainland as well. Here are some clues to the growth:
